In order to celebrate the "International Tea Day 2022", the themed event "Celebrating Tea Around the World, from Field to Cup", hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was held online on May 23. Qu Dongyu, FAO Director-General, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, former President of Mauritius, Ambassadors from China, Argentina, India, Tanzania, and guests from more than 20 countries around the world participated in the event. Vice president Yu Lu was also invited to attend the event and participate in the panel discussion.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu emphasized the need to strengthen women and youth empowerment actions, pay attention to the important contribution of small farmers to the tea industry, insist on the use of scientific and technological innovations, and further promote the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the tea industry development, so as to achieve better production, better nutrition, better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind.
Ambassadors from China, India, Argentina, and Tanzania were invited to display their unique traditional tea ceremony and tea garden scenery online. Guang Defu, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of China to FAO, showed the audience the brewing process of Longjing tea at the event.
During the panel discussion session, representatives of industrial organizations and companies from China, the United Kingdom, Kenya, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Italy discussed topics such as sustainable development of the tea industry, tea consumption, and empowerment of women. By introducing the specific actions of government, industries and enterprises on practicing sustainable development, vice president Yu Lu demonstrated to foreign friends the determination and confidence of China's tea industry to develop in a better, fairer, more inclusive and more sustainable direction.
In addition, vice president Yu Lu also shared China's innovative and practical achievements in tea production technology, product R & D and marketing mode, offering Chinese experience in promoting tea consumption for other countries.
This celebration aims to pay attention to the contribution of tea to the sustainable transformation of the agricultural food system, and call on everyone to focus on the society, women and the young people in the process of further realizing the sustainable development of the tea industry, so as to ensure that the production activities in each step of "from field to tea cup" comply with social norms and standards.
